About the University of Dayton

Located in Dayton, Ohio, the University of Dayton (UD) is a top-tier Catholic research university with academic offerings from the undergraduate to doctoral level. We are a diverse community, deeply committed to the common good and to encouraging students to use their knowledge to make a positive impact on the world.

School of Education and Health Sciences

The School of Education and Health Sciences (SEHS) prepares students for roles as teachers, administrators, counselors, health professionals, school psychologists and human service practitioners. We encourage students to ask thought-provoking questions and work to answer them though a framework of scholarship, research and practice.

The School's overall mission is to build learning communities through critical reflection. Our work is framed by our Marianist history and heritage, which commits us to community-building and service to others.

Through critical reflection, we foster a learning community that focuses on educational theory and practice. Our programs rely on real-world application of classroom concepts to prepare professionals who are able to create value-added learning and healthcare environments. Students participate in inquiry perspectives either through action research or critical reflection of fieldwork experience — both of which enhance the professional dispositions of outgoing graduates and build a network of collaborative partnerships.

Kevin R. Kelly

Dean of the School of Education and Health Sciences

"As a Catholic school student from grades 1-12, I wanted to be an education leader at a Catholic university that puts the principles of equity, social justice and peace into action through academic programs and community partnerships. [At the University of Dayton SEHS] we integrate theory, practice and values in all of our courses. Students seeking the next level of professional attainment need to acquire the extensive knowledge and skills needed to make an actual impact."

We were the first university to establish an undergraduate program in human rights studies, and our Human Rights Center creates positive change through research, education and dialogue.

Storied Athletics

The Flyers compete at the NCAA Division I level, and 10 teams have advanced to the postseason in the last decade: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's cross country, football, men's and women's soccer, women's track and field (indoor and outdoor) and volleyball. Our basketball teams reached the Elite Eight in 2014 (men) and 2015 (women).
